Cornwall County Indoor Athletics Championships (Sportshall)

Thursday 3rd January 2008 saw the annual indoor county championships held at St Austell Rugby Club. Dave Varney writes:

With the prospect of there being no Sportshall Championships since the County League started in 1993, Newquay & Par Athletic Club took on the responsibility with the help of the County Development Officer, Mo Pearson, to host the event at Tregorrick Park, St Austell for the first time.

The club approached their indoor training facility provider, The Cornwall Table Tennis Centre who agreed to extend their usual Thursday booking at no extra cost & gained support from the adjacent St Austell Rugby Club who re-arranged bookings to enable the use of both halls.

The High Jump, Shot & foam Javelin competitions were fitted into a two hour slot in the Rugby Club Sports Hall, with the running events, long / triple jump, vertical jump, balance beam, overhead throw & speed bounce over a four hour period in the Table Tennis Centre.

The main priority was to select teams to represent Cornwall in the South West Championships, firstly for the under 11's, two weeks later & then the Under 13 & Under 15 age groups, leading to the National Championships in March.

There was uncertainty about the numbers that would make the Championships given the Christmas period & school break but a terrific response from athletes, schools & parents throughout the County saw 102 young athletes competing for the Championship medals & certificates, as well as the team selection places.

Although 'track' records are held, these vary given the length of the halls concerned, previously Penair School & Truro College, given the times recorded & class of some of the athletes involved, it is clear that this venue would have been longer than the College hall, however, there is no disputing the Record broken by under 15 Shot Putter, Matthew Halton (N&P), who launched the 4kg shot out to a massive 15.95m with his opening throw, smashing the 1996 Record of Adrian Rawling at 14.69m. The remainder of the four Under 15 events, 2 lap. 4 lap, Standing Long Jump & Vertical jump were all won by Robert Newcombe (CAC)

The under 15 numbers were small but still provided quality performances from track star Lamorna Newman (CAC) in the 2 Lap & 4 Lap races against under 15 Boys & 2.20m in the standing long jump with Philippa Brett (N&P) on form for the Vertical Jump & Speed Bounce wins.

In the under 13 Boys Liam Littlejohns from (CAC) was a triple winner in the 2 lap, 4 lap & high jump. Will Harvey produced a double win in the 1 lap hurdles & standing long jump. In the under 13 Girls Lowena Jones (CAC) won a hat trick of events in the 2 Laps, 4 Laps & standing long jump. Maria Brett won the vertical jump & triple jump. Karis Harrington (N&P) was almost three metres clear in the Shot put with a new best of 8.52m.

Under 11, Charlotte Cayton-Smith (N&P) not only won her own age group 1 Lap, 2 Lap & Standing Triple Jump but also moved up to Under 13 to take the High Jump victory with 1.30m. Libby Cock (CAC) came close to 2 metres in the standing Long Jump at 1.99m & added the Vertical Jump.

Plymouth's Alastair Tamblyn was also a classy speed specialist winning the Under 11 Boys 1 lap & 2 lap in style. Shay Drew (N&P) was a double winner in the Standing Triple Jump & Speed Bounce, Corey Cross won both the 1 lap hurdles & foam javelin, Todd Mitchell won the standing long jump & balance test and Brandon Keast won the vertical jump & overhead ball throw.

To give the younger children a taster for future competion, for the first time in it's history an Under 9 competition was added. In the U9 boys competition Thomas Wills (CAC) left with an outstanding 4 gold medals in the 1 lap, 2 lap, standing long jump & speed bounce. In the girls competition Katie Jones won the 1 lap & standing long jump & Kerenza Hurr won both the vertical jump & speed bounce.
