About the club

Newquay & Par AC is one of the premier athletic clubs in the South West with over 180 members. Formed by an amalgamation of two existing clubs – Par AC and Newquay AC in 1984 the club boasts an impressive history of athletic success including representations for over 20 international vests, including three athletes competing in the World Junior Cross Country Championships. The club has two active bases at Par Track and Newquay Tretherras School.

Today, Newquay & Par serves East, Mid and North Cornwall with year round training in track & Field athletics, cross-country & Junior Sportshall. We have a bi-lateral agreement with Newquay Road Runners for anyone wanting to compete in this area of the sport.

Our members range from 8 to 60 years old with an equally diverse distribution in talent. Some members just enjoy keeping fit, some are more competitive, training hard to improve their personal bests whilst others are competing at the forefront of the international arena.

Facilities

The home base of the athletic club is at the Par Athletic Track, which is owned by Restormel Borough Council. From an existing cinder surface track it was upgraded to an all-weather surface with the aid of the National Lottery funding and was reopened in July 2000, hosting the prestigious South West Inter Counties in July 2003.

With its all weather surface, the six lane 400m track caters for all sprint, middle & long distance events, with full equipment for steeplechase and hurdles events. Par's Athletic facilities include two long jump/triple jump beds and runways, plus full equipment provided in the high jump and pole vault areas. There are two javelin runways, a shot circle and a competition standard cage for discus and hammer.

Competitions

The club is well represented in all Major and National Championship events throughout the year, providing our athletes with the highest standard of competition available. We currently compete in both men’s and women’s Southern Leagues involving traveling to fixtures throughout the Southern Region of England and are proud of the fact that our women's team are the only club from the South West to compete in the Premier Division.

The South West League provides a good level of team competition within the counties of Devon, Cornwall, Somerset and Dorset . Locally there are Open Competitions for all ages, including the younger Under 11 age groups.

During the winter – the club competes in the Westward League for cross-country & the Cornwall Sports Hall league for the younger members.

We also organise & host two multi-event competitions annually plus throws & pole vault events.

Coaching

All aspects of coaching are available from the novice or younger athlete through to the developing athlete who requires more specialist or technical help. Our coaches are brought through the various levels & are encouraged to progress & expand their knowledge in all disciplines. Even our  most experienced coaches attend ‘top up’ courses to stay aware of current trends.

Our junior athletes are also encouraged to help with coaching and some have gained their "Children in Athletics" certificates.

Child friendly Club

We are signed up to the Club Mark Scheme & take our responsibilities for child safety very seriously. We have volunteer Child protection & Welfare officers appointed & have a protection policy which can be viewed on the club notice board at Par Track. All our coaches are required to agree to police checks as a standard procedure and many have attended additional training such as as child protection and first aid.
