National Junior League

Newquay & Par Athletic Club celebrates a successful 2008 season.

Newquay & Par’s talented athletes proved their abilities in 2008 with sixteen athletes achieving twenty-one top thirty UK national rankings, twelve of which were top ten rankings.

Newquay & Par AC uniquely recognises its athletes’ achievements with special medals awarded to any junior achieving a top 25 UK national ranking and any senior achieving a top 50 UK national ranking. This year sixteen athletes achieved this goal with twenty-two top thirty rankings of which twelve were in the UK top ten. Jay Hill, Lee Hamilton, Daniel Pearce, Jordan Henwood, Matthew Halton, Isaac Vassell, Aidan Evison, Jemma Simpson, Tessa Williamson, Caroline Steven, Jasmin Hicks, April Hogg, Karis Harrington, Charlotte Lowe, Maria Brett and Charlotte Cayton-Smith all achieved this magnificent standard.

The club was formed 25 years ago from the amalgamation of Newquay AC and Par AC, a few faces still remain to this day, albeit slightly more weathered. The merge strengthened the club and improved the quality of the athletes, back then no one dared dream that one of our athletes would actually compete in the Olympic Games! All were proud to see Jemma Simpson run the 800m at the 2008 Olympics.

Last year’s team successes saw the Men prompted to Division 2 in the Men’s Southern league with the Women maintaining their premier league status in the Women’s Southern league. The club firmly stamped its mark in the South West League; their best result for years helped by a massive win by the U13 girls.

This year’s awards celebrated the achievements of the athletes, showing their potential, saying ‘these are athletes who have something special & are the club’s future’.

The U13 Girls have been pretty special, including an outstanding win in the SW League. Karis is an outstanding thrower, achieving a national number one ranking for shot putt and an 8th and 11th for javelin and discus. Charlotte, in her first year and an U13, was 2nd at the Southern Cross Country Champs and narrowly missed a medal at the UK National Inter Counties at Nottingham.

April Hogg was again awarded the U15 Triple C Shield. April has undoubtedly been the best U15 for the second year and deservedly retained the Shield.

Aidan Evison put in some pretty impressive performances both at middle distance & javelin in his first year as an U15  and as such receives the U15  Boys Francis Anthony Shield.

The U17 girls Larry Marsh Scaffolding Shield was awarded to Philippa Brett who not only competed in the National School Championships but also managed to find time to train the younger athletes.

Under 17 boy’s Kwikprint Shield was hotly contended and as such has been shared between three talented young men: Jordan Henwood, Matt Halton & Daniel Pearce. Despite illness Jordan pushed  the Pole Vault up to 4.20m to equal the long standing county record.  Matt broke the county records for Shot & Discus last summer and then added a national indoor title, breaking the County indoor record in the process. Daniel’s events include 200m, 400m, High Jump and Javelin, he achieved excellent county rankings, a superb performance at the National Schools Combined events and an England Schools International vest.

Andrew Balme Memorial Trophy to Encourage Javelin was awarded to Aaron Evison for a second year. Andrew Balme loved the event until his untimely death, his parents wanted us to award this perpetual trophy to a youngster who shows a talent for throwing.

Matt Harris is awarded the Men’s Southern League trophy, despite niggling injuries he still wanted to get involved in the team and travelled to every match. For her versatility and high scores the women’s trophy was awarded to Jamsin Hicks.

In the U20 category Nicola George received the Varney Cup. Nicola broke the 60 s barrier on several occasions, made it to the finals of the English schools and achieved a national grade 2 for 400m with a time of 58.6s. The Richard’s Cup was awarded to Jay Hill for his outstanding field performances, most notably his hammer throw of 59.69m.

The Vet Men’s award went to Mike Madden for his Grade 3 hammer throw of 46.34m. The Vets Ladies was awarded to Caroline Stevens who not only achieved a Grade 3 for her 3000m efforts but also achieved time worthy of 2nd in the Vets Women’s  UK national ranking for her inaugural steeplechase race.

The senior awards went to James Ansell and Jemma Simpson. James broke the 800m county record twice in one weekend at the Birmingham indoor arena. Jemma is setting a high standard for up and coming athletes; any athlete taking her county record will be able to say they have run faster than an Olympian.

The Chairman’s award was awarded to Roland Mark for his contributions to club development and fundraising. The Varney mug and secretary’s award was received by Tessa Williamson for widening her talents and developing her County and Southwest team management skills. The Club Member of the year has been awarded jointly to Adrian & Tracy Cayton-Smith for their development and expansion of the club website www.newparac.co.uk.
